Where Are The Chairs?

Analysis shows that with less than a week to go until the filing deadline, the HCRP is still having trouble filling precinct chair vacancies.

The goal of HTPS has been to encourage more participation in the political process in the precincts, since every election is won or lost in a precinct.  The HCDP seems to be doing fine with its level of participation, and they even offer a wealth of resources to precinct chairs that they can download themselves, but the Harris County Republican Party – not so much.

According to Ed Hubbard, candidate for HCRP Chair, the filings for the HCRP are down, meaning that if the filing deadline were today, there would be even fewer Republican chairs in Harris County going into the 2010 election than there are now.  While that part is bad, he does report that Harris County added 99 NEW filers to the process.  That’s certainly a victory for the tea party movement!  But without the incumbents filing to keep their positions, Harris County will have even less Republican presence at a time when they will need it most.  You can draw your own conclusions as to why incumbents are not re-filing.

So we’ve obtained figures about the approximate percentage of Harris County vacancies each Senate District has, and the results are below, with the PDF map of the district linked:

SD 4 – Tommy Williams –11 vacancies (39%)

SD 6– Mario Gallegos –117 vacancies (68%)

SD 7– Dan Patrick –37 vacancies (21%)

SD 11– Mike Jackson –30 vacancies (40%)

SD 13– Rodney Ellis –109 vacancies (61.2%)

SD 15– John Whitmire –90 vacancies (52.9%)

SD 17– Joan Huffman –27 vacancies (33.3%)

Whichever district you live in, please take a moment to check your precinct, and then this list to see whether there is a vacancy in your precinct.  If so, you can still recruit someone to run, or choose to run yourself, as long as they file by Monday.  And if you missed all the precinct training opportunities, the Woodlands group is offering one more training tonight:

When: December 30, 2009, from 6:30 to 9:00pm
Where: Woodlands IHOP (25619 I-45, 77380)
