  2. Wow! This audio-video stream is nice, given that its real time and coming over the Internet! You just need someone working the camera.

    Good job on this.

And we gotta thank capitalism and technology and all the rational businessmen, scientists, politicians, lawyers, and philosophers behind it all.

About how many people are there?

    #893
  8. Josh

There seems to be a crowd of people hanging around the computer/webcam chatting… could you ask them to move away about ten feet? =)
There is a constant undercurrent of “blahblahblah” overriding what the speakers are saying from people standing nearby.

I know that leftist bloggers (or do they call themselves progressives now?) are there looking to take pix of those that they will try to portray as “kooks”.

Hi Josh! People, this is a live feed from a computer……. cut the people and Josh some slack. It’s better than nothing. You can judge for yourself what is going on, and not wait for the lies from the Chronicle ( commical)

I had to work late but am soooo glad that you streamed a live feed. I really didn’t care about the people being in the way. I was listening and was smiling while I was working.

Josh, give me a link to a website that I can donate a longer cord to your organization, since I don’t know what a USB cord is.

Kuddos to Suzanne and Valerie from The Woodlands Tea Party for attending your event. They had me with them in spirit. Does that give me a head count? :)

I haven’t heard a peep about their head count last night.

What? It was today? I assumed it would be tomorrow … you know, on the actual Fourth of July. Bummer.

  14. Southern Tragedy

Jair: Hat tip: People are selfish and don’t want to give up their 4th of July. They’re busy. I thought it was pretty thoughtful of the Tea Party Patriots to choose a different date.

Geez. I guess they can’t win for losing.

To me? Tomorrow just doesn’t seem as special as my previous 4th of July holidays. I’m celebrating my “freedom” tomorrow when I know darn good and well that I’m losing it quickly with our current elected officials???

Republicans are included, so don’t think that I’m discriminating.

So Jair….what were YOU doing tonight?

  15. Felicia Cravens

    Ah, the old 4th dilemma.

We did try for that. No venue in the city wanted to touch a “protest” on the actual holiday, not even Discovery Green. And I totally understand their decision.

And really, the theme of the rally was supposed to be “May the Fourth be With You, Always” which worked well any day. Didn’t get to develop it more.

My husband and I live in Sealy. We went to the April 15th Tea Party in downtown Houston and were going to go to this one but he had to work yesterday. Fortunately for us there will be one this evening near Brookshire, which is only a short distance from us. We will definitely be there. We feel it’s very important to participate in these events and show the government – on all levels – that the silent majority is no longer remaining silent.

    Felicia,

I like “May the Fourth be With You, Always” and think you should start promoting that for next year. I don’t think the cause of our “protesting” is going to go away any time soon. It appears the powers that be aren’t even close to listening.

  18. Martha Wilson

Felicia, maybe we should start promoting people to try and converge on Washington DC on the 9/11-12. Maybe we could get enough people to show support. If people would go for the million man march, why can’t we get people to go to protect our liberty.
I have registered with the 9/12 to go, maybe we can get more people to think about it.

    #905
  19. Felicia Cravens

Martha, we’re just not participating in the event or driving people to it, for a lot of reasons. Instead, we’d like to spend our precious resources getting together an event most everyone could attend: a statewide rally in Austin on September 5th.

It could also be an opportunity for people who ARE going to DC meet up ahead of time and make friends before the trip.

  20. I’m no Leftist – I was there promoting Micheletti in Honduras, against Zelaya and Obama – and there were, unfortunately, kooks a-plenty on 3 July. I took pictures of several.

If you like 9/11 Truthers, the Birch Society, Obama birth-certificate freaks and the rest of that menagerie, then you’d have been at home at the 3 July rally. But normal people stayed away or, if they signed up, hot-footed it out of there.

    #908
  21. Josh

As we said, the truthers WERE removed, that is not a lie. John Birch was out there wanting to protest a change to the constitution, that one person connected with the tea parties once tried pushing. We agreed with that and let them. Tables were set as to not clutter the green, you didn’t have to go to anything you did not agree with. Normal people IGNORED the things they did not agree with.

    #909
  22. Felicia Cravens

What everyone forgets is that Tea Party is the broadest possible coalition to defeat the greatest number of threats to liberty. If there’s someone at the table that makes you feel uncomfortable, move places. Just because they support US doesn’t mean it’s reciprocal.

And what kind of jack-booted, stupid, wrong-headed movement would it be if we threw out every person we didn’t agree with 100%?

  23. Josh

Hell… At the Iranian support vigils http://sabzhouston.com/ I saw communists coming out and distributing their rags. Doesn’t mean the entire event was communist.

  24. John Hornsby

    Felicia,

Do you have a final tally on attendance?

    #916
  25. Josh

It’s nebulous. We had trouble signing people in. The Area was way too open, only about 3000 did sign in. There was traffic in and out, and some never even came onto the lawn to stay in the shade. Most people were entering behind me in the media booth in the middle of the north side of the lawn by the lakehouse where there was no sign in. Police told us 7000+ at the end of the day. But there was probably around 4000 there at a time, people said they couldn’t tolerate the heat.

    #917
  26. Josh,
Why were the Truthers singled out and removed? Are you aware that there are thousands of active and retired military personnel, government officials, engineers, pilots, architects, police officers, and firefighters that all disagree with the official government accounts of 9/11?
Regardless of whether or not they are correct, why would you silence their voice?

    #918
  27. Kelli

The 9/11 truthers weren’t there to talk about fiscal responsibility or any of the other reasons most people were there. They were there to promote their own agenda. I certainly didn’t want to listen to them, or have them spreading their misinformation. People like that diminish what the rest of us were there for.

On another topic, is the Houston TPS planning to participate in the 7/17 health care protest at Congressional offices?

    #919
  28. Kelli

P.S. If the truthers want to have a protest, let them host their own, not appropriate someone else’s.

They’re not just wrong, they’re embarassingly wrong. We rented the lawn and owned the space for the day. We could remove from t who we wanted, it’s not a free speech zone. They can protest from across the street if they like. We did deliberate if they were really that big a problem, but their sign was too big and they were passing out lit, finally Ryan got them kicked out. I am hearing rumors a guy from another group was there too… if I had known I would have personally kicked his ass out.

David is right we need standards, he argues we are too tolerant. We’re pretty aware of problems with the Birchers, (I, like David, am someone that would style myself a neo-con who disagrees with almost everything the Birchers stand for and groans at birth certificate talk) but have tolerated them. There are plenty of kooky and obnoxious and mistaken people that show up, especially for us being an urban area… Katy, Conroe, and Baytown don’t face as many of those problems. We recommend just ignore them. After you do these for a while, as we have, you just learn to live with it. Is our bar set just too low?

We’re debating it, Kelli… There are plenty of congressional offices and both Senators have Houston offices. Some of those guys are more varminty than the others… It’s around 7 or more simultaneous protests we’d have to pull together in two weeks. Too overwhelming… and we’re still exhausted.

We’re thinking a Healthcare townhall that night might work instead. What do you think?

I need to update with a new post. We’ve been so drained… I personally made 4 tea parties and ran one of them.

Congrats and thanks to all the volunteers and attendees at the July 3 event. I attended the Tax Day event also and can see a growing sophistication it how its handled. The attendance — 3000, 5000 whatever — is impressive. These are obviously not professional protesters (sorry volunteers — but that’s a good thing). They are everyday folk who took time on their holiday, in 100-plus temperatures to make their opinion known. That’s a tremendous thing. I am hugely encouraged. Efforts to register voters and facilitate efforts at the precinct level are great to see. Thanks. You’re all patriots!

    #922
  31. I’m impressed with the amount of information people attending the tea parties have. They aren’t “parroting” what they hear – the media don’t report real news. They talk with each other. They read blogs, online news, sign up for bulletins from varying groups.

Salesmen don’t like an educated consumer, and pols don’t like an informed voter.

Right now, I’d say the pols are quickly losing their ability to sell the public snake oil.

Good point Eddie. The first wave almost has to be self-educated because they can’t get it elsewhere. I attend for several reasons — to support, to learn, and to witness. Witness because I can’t trust the media or the political parties. When I show pictures and talk about these events with others, they can’t understand why they hear something entirely different from other “sources.” Recognizing they are being lied to is the first step in enlightenment. Like the man said, Who you gong to believe, me or your lying eyes? When that truth sinks home, this whole thing will flip in a hurry (I hope)

We should have had the guy out on his balcony in the building behind the stage take pictures periodically. That would have been sweet!

The main thing I wanted to address about thie discussion is this:

We’re about fiscal responsibility and constitutionality. Lots of others share those views. But just because they attend OUR rallies, that does NOT constitute an endorsement from us.

Idiocy I’m not inclined to see tossed out of a rally. Disruptiveness? Absolutely. When we sink thousands of dollars (that hundreds of generous people donated to us to get this event done) into an event to let people have their say, then the city states that we “own” the real estate for that time, and have the ability to remove people who are disruptive etc.

It also allows us to require anyone passing out literature for a candidate, cause or issue buy a booth to do so. Otherwise we have the typical media problem of their focus on the fringers and casting their message as ours.

Thanks to all involved who put on the event. Another fine performance.
